A SCORE TO SETTLE

5 May 2019 by Club Admin

For your information….

As you probably know, yesterday was the first time ever that DFNC has defeated Mt Eliza..

It is hard to remember a tougher game of football; and it would rank as one of the truly great wins in the club’s history. I was talking briefly to Gary Ferguson about the playing Mt Eliza in the late 1990’s….

In 1997, we played Mt Eliza twice …The scores were…

Round : 7 at Home: Mt Eliza 40.23 . 263 defeated Dromana 6.5.41

Round : 16 at Mt Eliza: Mt Eliza 43.18. 276 defeated Dromana 2.1. 13 Anson Brownless ( Billy’s brother) kicked 18 goals that day.

Mt Eliza’s club notes the following week ( 9th August ) included…

“ To me ( the MEFC club scribe) it seems to be an issue the league has to look at when you’re beating the opposition by 20 goals or more. It’s not good for the standard of the league and revenue through the gate or behind the bar . I can feel for Dromana but this type of thing can’t go on…”

It is unclear what the writer was actually suggesting or implying but it was a subtle backhander that ‘stung our club ’ ….However , it should be remembered Mt Eliza was hardly a ‘powerhouse team’ in that season and finished 6th. Meanwhile, Sorrento finished second bottom that year with just three wins …( they beat us twice).

Our percentage at the end of the 1997 season was 3.51% ( i.e. points for= 196 points against =5572 )

There’s an old expression ‘scores to be settled’ …22 years later is quite a wait.

Best wishes and well done to everyone on a fighting victory of the ‘first order.’
